Comparative Advantage
Comparative advantage says a country (or desk) should specialize in the activity with the lowest opportunity cost, even if it is worse at everything in absolute terms.
Definition
Ricardo: trade gains come from relative, not absolute, productivity. Autarky opportunity-cost ratios set the trading range. Absolute advantage decides how rich you are; comparative advantage decides the pattern of specialization.
Why it matters
It is the deepest argument against ‘we should make everything at home.’ Also a desk metaphor: do the book you have edge in, even if another pod has higher Sharpe on everything.
Case
England/Portugal cloth-and-wine is the parable. Modern versions: East Asia in assembly vs design, or a vol desk that is second-best at directional macro but first-best at variance.
How to read it
Write the opportunity-cost table. If you only quote absolute productivity, you have not used the concept.
