The VIX Trading Bible

Implied Variance, Dealer Gamma and the Machinery Behind Equity Fear

v1.0CANONICAL15 chaptersOne-time purchase

A desk reference for how the VIX complex prices fear, hedges dealers, and transmits into equities, credit, and cross-asset risk.

Why this exists

VIX is not a vibes gauge. It is a tradable complex: SPX options, VIX futures term structure, ETPs, skew, and dealer hedging flows that mechanically reshape equity and credit risk.

Most retail narratives collapse the stack into “fear up / stocks down.” Desks that survive regimes treat VIX as plumbing: realized vs implied, contango bleed, gamma supply, roll yield, and crash premium — each with its own clock and balance sheet.

This Bible is an institutional map: index construction, futures & ETPs, dealer gamma, term-structure regimes, crisis ledgers, a stress dashboard, scenario matrix, and a trading playbook. It is not a daily tip sheet and not a Research Membership unlock.

Index vs Complex — VIX print is a strip measure — trading happens in futures, options, and ETPs.

VIX is often sold as a fear gauge. That nickname is marketing. Under the hood it is a model-free estimate of expected SPX variance derived from a strip of listed options — a price of insurance, not a mood ring.

The index itself is not directly tradeable. What desks trade is the complex around it: SPX options that define the strip, VIX futures that term-structure the expected path, options on VIX, and ETPs that package roll into a share-like instrument. Confusing the index print with a futures price is the first unforced error.

Because the construction is options-based, VIX embeds skew and wing demand. When crash insurance is bid, the strip lifts even if spot is calm. When dealers are long gamma and selling vol into strength, the same index can grind lower while realized stays muted. The “fear” narrative misses the balance-sheet story.

VIX also lives inside a funding and hedging ecosystem. CTA and risk-parity deleveraging, dealer gamma flips, and ETP rebalance flows all interact with equity spot. That is why VIX spikes can look like equity events that “cause” vol — when the plumbing ran both directions.

This chapter builds the foundation for the rest of the Bible: what the index measures, what it does not, and why desks must map the complex (spot options → futures curve → ETPs → hedging flows) before they talk about a trade.

If you only remember one line: VIX is a priced expectation of variance with a term structure and a dealer-flow wrapper — treat it as machinery, not mythology.
