The Yen Carry Bible
Funding Currency, JGB Gravity and the Machinery Behind Global Risk
A desk reference for how yen funding, JGB gravity, and official reaction functions transmit into global risk.
Why this exists
The yen is not just another G10 FX pair. For three decades it has functioned as the world’s quiet funding currency: a balance-sheet input that shapes leverage in equities, credit, commodities, and volatility.
When Japanese real rates were suppressed, surplus savings searched the globe. Carry trades, FX-hedged bond portfolios, insurer overlays, and CTA positioning all sat on that foundation — often invisibly until the unwind.
This Bible is built as an institutional map: funding anatomy, JGB gravity, BOJ and MoF reaction functions, Washington’s role, historical unwind ledgers, a stress dashboard, scenario matrix, and a trading playbook. It is not a newsletter teaser and not a Research Membership unlock.

Ch. 01 · Japan Built the World’s Funding Currency
Japan did not set out to become the world’s funding currency. It became one because domestic policy produced a persistent surplus of savings hunting for return, while local rates and term premia were held down for a generation.
ZIRP and later NIRP were not merely “easy money” slogans. They reshaped household, bank, insurer, and pension behavior: duration was repressed at home, so capital sought carry abroad — in USD credit, EM local markets, equities, and increasingly in leveraged FX overlays.
JGB suppression was the gravitational core. When the government curve is pinned, private balance sheets still need yield. That yield search is the funding-currency engine. The yen’s role in global leverage is therefore not a personality trait of USDJPY candles; it is a stock of positions built on Japanese real-rate repression.
Capital export took many forms: life insurers buying foreign bonds with partial FX hedges; banks and trusts extending yen liabilities into higher-yielding assets; hedge funds and CTAs expressing carry through forwards and options; corporates and households participating indirectly through funds. Each channel has different hedges, tenors, and unwind speeds.
The practical implication for a risk desk is simple and brutal: yen weakness can look like a one-way funding gift until the real-rate regime flips. When Japanese policy credibility, wage-inflation dynamics, or MoF intervention change the expected path of rates and FX, the same stock of positions that funded global risk becomes a forced seller of risk assets worldwide.
This chapter builds the foundation for the rest of the Bible: why Japan became the funding source, which balance sheets sit on that plumbing, and why “yen up / risk down” episodes are not coincidences but mechanical deleveraging of a global carry architecture.
