CDX IG Index
CDX IG Index tracks the cost of insuring a basket of North American investment-grade corporate credit and is widely used as a real-time gauge of credit stress and financial conditions.
Definition
CDX IG Index is one of the most useful real-time market indicators for tracking U.S. credit conditions. It represents the cost of insuring a basket of North American investment-grade corporate credits through credit default swaps. In plain terms, it tells you how expensive the market thinks high-quality corporate credit risk has become.
Mechanism
When CDX IG widens, the message is usually straightforward: financial conditions are tightening, hedging demand is rising, or confidence in corporate balance-sheet stability is weakening. It does not always mean immediate crisis, but it does mean the cost of credit protection is moving higher, and that should never be treated as decorative information.
Portfolio application
CDX IG matters because credit often reacts to stress in a cleaner and less sentimental way than equities. Equities can remain supported by positioning, retail flows, or narrative inertia. Credit protection indices usually have less patience. That is why CDX IG widening while equities remain calm can be an especially valuable divergence signal.
How to monitor
In practice, CDX IG should be compared with CDX HY, Treasury volatility, MOVE, and equity volatility. If both CDX IG and CDX HY are widening, the market is moving beyond isolated concern and into broader repricing of credit risk. If CDX IG is stable while equities wobble, the stress may be more localized or technical. If CDX IG starts to break wider first, the market may be warning you that the real damage is still upstream.
