Agricultural CTA
Grains and oilseeds — corn, soy, wheat, and their products — where weather, USDA prints, and harvest calendars sit on top of generic trend.
Definition
Outrights plus crush and calendar spreads. Signals can be pure price or quantamental (acreage, yield models, export inspections). Liquidity dives in back months and in some wheat contracts. Position limits bind faster than in ES.
Why it matters
Ag trends can be orthogonal to financials for long stretches — a real diversifier — and then a dollar/liquidity week correlates everything.
Case
A drought summer: trend longs in beans pay; a USDA shock the other way is a gap the ATR did not contain. The print is the event risk financial CTAs underestimate.
How to read it
Outright vs crush mix, limit-up rules, and capacity vs OI. A diversified CTA’s ‘ag sleeve’ is not an ag specialist.
