COVID Crash 2020
The February–March 2020 COVID crash was a dash-for-cash that hit even Treasuries, ended by an unprecedented joint monetary-fiscal backstop — a health shock that became a market-function crisis.
Definition
A real shutdown shock met leveraged basis, risk-parity, and mutual-fund selling. The surprising chapter was the Treasury cash market seizing (OTR/OFTR, MBS). The Fed bought the market, opened swap lines, and stood up facilities; Congress passed CARES. The V was policy, not virology.
Why it matters
It proved that in a dollar system the CB must sometimes be the dealer of last resort in the ‘safe’ asset. Also that fiscal can replace private income faster than 2008 allowed.
Case
23 March 2020 QE infinity, corporate credit facilities, and a 3-week equity crash into a 6-month melt-up. The real-side recession was sharp and short in the US data.
How to read it
Separate virus from plumbing. Credit and Treasury basis were the financial crisis; the virus was the impulse.
