Fade the Move
To fade the move is to take the other side of a fast print — sell a spike, buy a dump — on the view that it is flow or a squeeze, not a new equilibrium.
Definition
Fading is a mean-reversion trade against the last impulse. It requires a reason the impulse is transitory (covering, window dressing, a stop cascade) and a stop of your own. Blind fading is how knives get caught.
Why it matters
A lot of desk P&L is fade-versus-chase. Being systematically the fade in a trend year is a career choice.
Case
Fading a one-print NFP spike that did not move the strip versus fading the first day of a war. Same verb, different expected value.
How to read it
Need a catalyst-expiry and a catalog of who is in the move. If the buyer is a CB or a forced pension, fading is heroism.
