Synthetic Lending Rates Predict Market Return
Time the equity index with a borrow/lending-fee composite — when synthetic shorting is expensive, the tape is crowded the other way.
Definition
Build a market-level (or cross-sectional) lending-fee / synthetic-rate measure from securities lending. High fees can mean bearish crowding or a squeeze regime. The timing rule must pick a sign and a threshold in a hold-out.
Why it matters
Borrow is a direct crowding tape. It is also a squeeze tape. The same high fee has two readings.
Case
2021: high fees in a handful of names were a squeeze, not a market short signal. A market-level aggregate is safer than single-name fees for timing beta.
How to read it
Aggregate vs single-name, and a squeeze vs informed-short split. Do not treat fee as a monotonic ‘bearish’ switch.
