Blue Chip
A blue chip is a large, established, usually profitable listed company — a reputation, not a risk-free claim.
Definition
The term is informal: mega/large cap, long listing, dividends, household name. Blue chips still cut dividends, lever up, and get disrupted. They are liquid and researched, which is not the same as cheap or safe.
Why it matters
Core indexes and ‘quality’ sleeves are blue-chip heavy. Concentration risk hides under the compliment.
Case
GE was a blue chip until it was an industrial restructuring. The nickname lagged the cash flows by a decade.
How to read it
Treat it as a liquidity and coverage tag. Then do the same ROIC and leverage work you would on a mid-cap.
