Value Stock
A value stock screens cheap on book, earnings, or cash flow — a low multiple that can be a bargain or a melting ice cube.
Definition
Classic value is low P/B or P/E versus history or peers. The risk is a value trap: cheap because capital is earning less than it used to. Quality-value mixes cheap with a franchise; deep value does not.
Why it matters
Value as a factor has long winters. Cheapness is a necessary screen, not a catalyst.
Case
EU banks at 0.5× book in 2020 were value. The catalyst was rates and NII, not the multiple alone. Without that, cheap stayed cheap.
How to read it
Why is it cheap, what is the capital need, and what is the catalyst. A low multiple with shrinking book is a trap until proven otherwise.
